Volkswagen Corrado 2.9 VR6 3d Auto (1996/N) Owner Review

Economy
Value
Way too expensive when new (~£25,000) considering dashboard quality and lack of gadgets (active rear spoiler apart). Good value used buy by around 5 years old although some overpriced thrashed rubbish about.
Costs
Ok if nothing goes wrong. Coreado only parts very expensive, shared Golf MK 3 parts much cheaper. Likes petrol (can get 30+mpg on motorway but average is more like 20mpg)

On the road
Driving
Great drive with loads of grip though does understeers a little - helps if you keep the power on through corners. Firm suspension, goes best on smooth motorways - pot-holes round town are a definite no-no!
Performance
2.9L smooth VR6 is very quick, even for an Auto.

Living with it
Reliability
If well maintained and treated with respect, there should be few problems. Can go through front tyres and suspension components (bushes, ball joints, etc).
Image
Unique. Nothing else much like it, does not shout too loud though. Still looks good years after production ceased. Front a bit square perhaps, but hey-that was the look in '89.
Comfort
I can find very few cars even today which have as good seats (recarro). Ride is firm, but quite bearable on good roads.

Security and Service
Security
Poor. After-market systems should (need for insurance?) to be fitted.
Service
Main dealers a bit hit and miss. Use dealer for service (until higher miles?) and independent specialist for all other jobs.
