In their own words
Okay. I confess: I’m a petrol-head. My old car was a small Audi with a huge engine. Fun, fast and ferocious. It made a great noise and it chewed petrol. I started to feel a bit guilty about that. And it was costing a bomb to run. So I looked into electric cars and saw this e-Golf was ‘end of line’. The ID3 was coming coming, so maybe there was a bargain to be had? And that’s exactly what I got. I’m buying this e-Golf with a chunky loan, insuring and charging it for less than I used to spend on petrol per month. With enough to spare that I’ve been able to keep, maintain, tax and insure the old Audi as my Sunday driver and I’m still quids in. The e-Golf isn’t the fanciest, fastest or coolest EV, but it’s great value and .., well, it’s a Golf! Unmistakably it’s all that has made Golf a great icon, a great brand over the decades - comfortable, classy, and understated. It does the job, day in, day out. Okay the range is not huge, but in the summer at B-road speeds I’ve stretched it to almost 200 miles. And honestly, range isn’t such a big deal as you think it’s going to be before you buy an EV. Because, if you think about it, when was the last time you drove 150 miles in a day? When you need to travel further, you use an app to find the rapid chargers and enjoy a coffee while you wait half an hour to charge it full again. The e-Golf is well-designed, all the tech works and it’s big enough for a small family. It’s safe, well-mannered on the road and even moderately peppy - up to about 40mph. And when I want something a bit crazier, louder and more sporty, I get the old Audi out and burn some petrol again. Just to remember how much fun it was. Maybe you too could enjoy doing something similar?
