What does this car say about you?

Probably that i'm going through a mid-life crisis, need a convertible to pretend that i'm still young, free and single but realise that i'm actually none of those things so bought a four seater diesel.

What do your friends / family / neighbours think of the car?

They all seem to like it although say that it is a girl's car. This requires me to keep pointing out that it is actually the wife's car and i just happen to drive it when the sun is shining!

Would you buy this car again and why?

No, i think i'm now over the whole needing a convertible thing and would rather have a second car that is more practical and cheaper to run.

What are you likely to buy next?

We're about to change it for a Kia Rio.

Did you buy this car new?

    No

    £14,000

When did you buy the car?

    March 2010

Did you get a good deal and why?

Not particularly, it was the cheapest comparable car on Autotrader at the time but it was also low spec.

Is there any special reason why you bought this car?

Wanted a diesel hard top convertible that wasn't French.

    What was the dealer like?

Not great, the whole thing was done over the phone and they were helpful at first but then cancelled the pickup date with one day's notice and then were unhelpful when i had problems with the car after purchase.

    What's it like to drive?

I don't like it from a driver's point of view. For a 2 litre turbo it is incredibly weak, probably it is a lot heavier than a conventional hard top which might not help. Its also fairly easy to stall for a diesel, particularly at low revs. From an economy point of view, however, its quite good and i regularly get better average MPG figures than the brochure ever claimed - i'm certainly often in the mid 60's - although this does rather ignore the possibility that the computer thingy is lying to me!.

    What's it like to park?

The wife can't park it but i'm not sure the car can be held fully accountable here. She says she can't see anything out of the rear window, it does have parking sensors at the back but she's probably talking too loudly to hear those. I think its OK.

Have you had any problems with the car?

Yes, the electric windows are designed to go down about 1 cm every time you open the door to protect the rubber seals. The problem is that they sometimes randomly go down for no reason, even when you get out of the car and close the door. This first happened on the day we took delivery and although VW fixed it (after a bit of arguing) it does still occasionally happen. Also the traction control broke and the exhaust pressure sensor also broke. Both were expensive to fix.

What's most practical about your car?

If you want a convertible then it is more practical to have a hard top for various reasons and i still like that. Also the two rear seats are genuinly useable meaning that we often use this car for family outings in preference to the family car.

    Favourite gadget, option or accessory?

Apart from the rather obvious point about the roof coming off it doesn't have too many gadgets.
