Volkswagen Golf Estate 1.9 TDi CL 5d (1997/P) Owner Review
-
Economy
Value
More expensive than the competition, but worth it on TDi fuel savings alone plus VW longevity and reliability.
Costs
Fuel consumption is excellent, will save me about £500/annum (20-25K miles) compared to most TDs (e.g. 306TD, Xantia TD, Golf TD). Don't know about other costs as I have only recently bought it.

On the road
Driving
Good to drive, supple ride although can be a bit jerky at very low speed on poor roads.
Performance
Excellent for a diesel and more powerful than many petrol engines.

Living with it
Reliability
Unknown as I haven't had it long... hope it's ok!
Image
Ok, some look better than others depending on trim etc.
Comfort
Seats are really good - firm and supportive means I don't get backache. The level of road, wind and engine noise is higher than I expected, but I have got used to it now and it's not an issue. Loads of room in the boot (e.g. better than Audi A4 Avant).
