Volkswagen Golf Estate 1.6 S 5d (2000/V) Owner Review
-
Economy
Value
A bit expensive for what it is, but has a lot of standard kit (e.g. ABS, 4 airbags, electric sunroof etc.)
Costs
Expensive to maintain. Major service £300+. Parts are not cheap, too.

Driving
Very good driving position. Steering is not sharp. Gearbox is stiff and notchy.
Performance
Adequate. Body is a bit heavy for 1.6 engine.

Living with it
Reliability
Probably the most unreliable car I have ever had! At 42k miles, gearbox went landing me with £1500 repair bill. Apparently there is a design fault in the gearbox, but VW wouldn't admit it.
Image
A car for snobs (including myself ;-))
Comfort
Driving position is spot on.
