In their own words
This is an excellent car!
It replaced a Supercharged Jaguar S Type R. A little quicker than the Golf but could be VERY thirsty, that also was excellent however I didn’t like it’s replacement. Before that was a Porsche Boxster, the best handling car I’ve ever driven providing the road was smooth but I live in a village!
Before those I had a Sierra Sapphire Cosworth 4x4 which when on Bridgestone tyres with Bilstein shock absorbers was superb.
I’ve given this preamble to set the scene.
I like quick comfortable cars. My first R (a Mk7) was on 19” wheels - they looked good but the ride was awful. My current one (a Mk7.5) has 18” wheels and the ride is definitely better, it also has more adjustment of the suspension settings too. It came with leather, I wouldn’t have chosen leather but I must say, after having lived with it for a while, that I’m pleased to have it. The seats are very comfortable and grip you well.
The adaptive cruise control is a godsend in towns and other places with heavy, slow moving traffic but on the motorway it is infuriating. I forces me into lane 2 far too early or to override it with the accelerator pedal and I have it set on the smallest possible intervention distance. (Can I keep the ACC but switch it off on motorways?).
These are relatively small niggles because overall I think this car is fantastic. Would I have another? YOU BET.
How reliable do you find the car?
1 possible problem which only occasionally comes to light. When pulling away fast to join in a small gap in the traffic on the main road from a tee junction, especially when turning right on a damp road, I have what I can only describe as ‘axle tramp’ from the rear axle. This concerned me so much that I asked the dealer to check that the rear suspension is ok, with nothing loose. My car came back with a clean bill of health however it has happened since! I’ve arranged to go back to the dealership, when allowed, to take a mechanic for a ride to demonstrate. In the meantime I wait for larger gaps in the traffic on the main road.Does the car do everything you expected it to do?
This is my second Golf R. Both estates (I found they handle better and are quieter than the hatch), my first was a Mk7 which I liked so much I bought a Mk7.5 before they disappeared.About their car
