Economy
Value
Easy to find, usually with high milage, but still good reliability. Many in very good condition for under £1000.
Costs
Volkswagen parts can be costly, but due to the age and amount of Golfs around, a good Volkswagen braker can provide cheap replacements for smaller bits. Costs could get heavy with bigger problems.

Driving
Fun to drive. Steering can be heavy without PAS, but a nice all round drive.
Performance
Surprisingly nippy if they've been looked after. Performance tends to die a little in 4th gear, but 2nd and 3rd pull very well.

Living with it
Reliability
It's a Volkswagen. With regular oil changes, it will start in any weather and is not likely to break down.
Image
Golfs will always have a good image, the big bumper models especially. If the car is clean it will look good, simple as that.
Comfort
The seats can be a little hard and the driving position a little low. The car is generally quite comfortable, but long trips may ache!

Security and Service
Security
The locks are quite easy to break and there is no standard alarm. Fitting an alarm will improve the security dramatically.
Service
Never had the car serviced by the manufacturer.
