Value
Best buy for a good honest car.
Costs
Dealer parts can be high, however lots of third party quality parts avaible at low prices.
-
On the road
Driving
No frills, no PAS, clutch heavy and close ratio gears. All that you want - loads of feedback.
Performance
Outstanding lightweight powerhouse. Will beat many newer models.
-
Living with it
Reliability
Never had any major problems. Rear calipers stick - can be replaced with Mk3 versions.
Image
80s icon, however still looks good in an age of rounded cars.
Comfort
Very supportive seats, wears well and has loads of boot space.
-
Security and Service
Security
Not great all. Insurance requires at least Cat2. Door plates recommended (cost approx £30).
Service
Know what they are on about. Beware of any VW garage work - they have a habit of overcharging for unnecessary work.

Problems and Ownership
Problems
Engine
Oil tight as a drum. If it does leak, check sump gasket - these go first.
Other
Rear calipers seize. Try fitting Mk3 GTi rear calipers; known problem with GTis.
