Economy
Value
Excellent value for money given the quality and performance of the car you are getting.
Costs
Dealers parts can be expensive, but there are lots of other alternatives. I use genuine VW items for most things mechanical, but for other items, use someone like Euro car parts.

On the road
Driving
Handling is much better than all of the later models. Steering is precise and damping is excellent. Doesn't torque steer when abused either. The perfect all rounder.
Performance
Good performance. 8v very flexible and will still outperform most current models.

Living with it
Reliability
Mechanically 100%. Heater motors can fail and boot locks get cruddy. Plastics lose their colour.
Image
Image was good, but being the bad boys/thieves favourite had tarnished it somewhat. Nowadays, much better and fondly remembered by all. Who didn't aspire to have a Golf GTi at some time?
Comfort
No problems here. Suspension can crash over certain bumps, but put that more down to age and worn components. Front seats very supportive and comfortable.

Security and Service
Security
What security? Door skins by the door handle very vulnerable. Get some armor door plates and a good alarm. Thieves still like them as do joyriders. Basically lock it up well, or loose it.
Service
VW main dealers absolute rubish. Don't pay £40.00 per hour to have some trainee working on it. I use local independant VW specialist and they not only are miles cheaper but give better service.

Nothing to speak of.
