Economy
Value
The Mk2 Golf GTIs tend to hold their value well. I have no plans to sell the car as I have just acquired it from my parents!
Costs
In this instance, my Golf has needed a few things done to it as it has been lying idle for a few months. German build quality shines through, though.

On the road
Driving
Tight handling, firm but comfortable ride and responsive steering make this car a five star driving experience!
Performance
For a 16 year old car, performance and fuel consumption is excellent. Acceleration is superb. Top speed has been approx 121mph!

Living with it
Reliability
Never failed to start, even in the cold, although it has been hampered by usual time-worn faults such as exhaust, wheel bearings, alternator etc.
Image
The Golf GTI marque is a classic and the cars, if kept in good order are the nicest, classiest hot hatches on the market. The image is only tarnished by the thieves and boy racers who don't care for its culture.
Comfort
Recaro engineered seats are supportive and offer good driving positions. Leaks from sunroof and doors can become a pain on longer distances!

Security and Service
Security
The GTI badge attracts its fair share of admirers, not all of them are welcome. My car has seen a smashed rear windscreen, resulting in a stolen stereo and an attempted theft by a joyrider with a screwdriver!
Service
Rating this at 3 as I have never used Volkswagen for any work.

Problems and Ownership
Problems
Engine
Largely robust and well engineered, although servicing regularly is essential given the car's age.
Other
The only major problem that I have experienced with the car has come from leaking doors and sunroof. New carpets, sound proofing and door membranes are required!
