Volkswagen Golf Hatchback 1.8 Driver 3d (1996/N) Owner Review

-
Economy
Value
Good solid car though not many standard 'toys'.
Costs
Parts can be expensive (£250 to fit new clutch) and insurance is higher than expected. Fuel economy ok - 400 miles on a full tank (£35).
-
On the road
Driving
Positive gearchange and steering though let down by slightly soft suspension.
Performance
Ok, heavy car so is sluggish on A-roads, but good town driving due to torquey engine.
-
Living with it
Reliability
Clutch failed at 68k miles (common fault with dodgy clutch cable). Main crank shaft oil seal failed at 70k. In its defence, it covers 550 miles a month and has not yet failed to start.
Image
Typical German car following - has GTi trim and smart alloys.
Comfort
Sports seats are quite firm, but I find them a little un-supportive on long daily journey.
-
Security and Service
Security
Standard security is average. If you wish to keep it, suggest CAT 1 alarm and after-market armour door plates (door handles are security weak point).
Service
Service is too expensive to justify spending on sub-£3k car. Use independant specialists and main dealer parts.

Problems and Ownership
Problems
Engine
Leaking oil seal and unexplained misfire at low revs.
Other
Exhaust heat shield has broken its welds, producing a very anoying rattle.
