Economy
Value
Bought in 1999. Expensive to buy new and secondhand, however get a lot back when you sell it.
Costs
Very cheap - my dad services it! Nothing ever goes wrong!

Driving
Very soft suspension. My 1.0L (K-Reg) Polo had stiffer suspension. Rolls on corners and steering heavy, even with power steering, compared to everything else I have driven (even Transit van !)
Performance
Good for a 1.9TDi. Faster than petrol 1.6s and up there with some 1.8s.

Living with it
Reliability
Excellent. Dad has 3 Passat TDis, one L-Reg (140,000 miles and owned since new), one N-Reg (110,000 miles, owned last 25,000) and one newer model R-Reg (65,000 miles, owned last 20,000). Never any problems. Also, 2 Golfs before.
Image
Very good. Better than Escorts and Astras and on a par with 306s and Rover 200s.
Comfort
Good seats and trim - better quality than next generation Astra etc. Shame about bodyroll and slighly noisey over potholes - too soft and banging suspension!

Security and Service
Security
Don't know - never broken into! - yet. However, no alarm on one of this age.
Service
Don't go to Volkswagen Garages, but Dad has usual problems with them - they are rubblish. Same with all manufacturers, though.
