Economy
Value
There were only 1500 16v GTI's released in the UK so do not expect to find a bargain. These cars go for top dollar and always will do.
Costs
Parts are not cheap, but you will not need to replace much as it is very reliable.

Driving
The plus suspension that comes with the higher models is comfortable yet sporty. Grips well for a big 90's car, but over 100mph it does start to get bouncey. Sure footed and you can feel where the car is and where it is going to go.
Performance
The 16v engine does take a while to wind up but the power band very noticabley kicks in at 4500rpm. 1st gear is a bit long, but does help you from spinning. 2nd gear is spot on. De-tuned to 150bhp so a remap should easily see 180bhp.

Living with it
Reliability
It's a VW, can you expect anything other than the best?
Image
The Golf has a great image, from a safe reliable car to a sports hot hatch. And you do not need to do anything to make them look good.
Comfort
Great driving posistion and great seats. Sport seats so they stop you sliding about.
