Economy
Value
Good value second-hand, as you can really benefit from the durability. Better than average build quality, which by this age will be nearing the end of its life. A reasonably well cared for Golf will still have years left.
Costs
Dealer parts and service a little pricey but most common mechanical & service items available aftermarket for DIY. Easy to work on and only moderate devaluation to contend with. Overall costs probably less than a cheaper car.

On the road
Driving
solid and stable with good ride and predictable handling and plenty of grip but more happy on the motorway than around the back lanes where it can be rather hard work.
Performance
Not really worthy of the GTi badge in 8v form but a good puller if not the ultimate traffic light dragster. Adequate rather than exciting.

Living with it
Reliability
No real problems encountered with only 2 breakdowns both being failures to start. First was fuel pump relay second was coil. Both easily and cheaply fixed.
Image
Getting on a bit now for the ultimate curb appeal however still cuts a dash over other similar vehicle of this age.
Comfort
Good ride and comfortable seats coupled with a very good driving position for most people make even long journeys relatively tireless.

Security and Service
Security
Not the best. worth fitting extra security such as a good immobiliser etc. Most insurers will require this anyway.
Service
Not really applicable as most work done DIY however the parts service was excellent if a little pricey on the few occasions I used it.
