Volkswagen Golf Hatchback 2.0 GTI 5d (2001/X) Owner Review

Economy
Value
You'll always pay a premium - I got lucky with a cheaper one (or so I thought)...
Costs
Pretty average. If you avoid VW branded parts, they're quite cheap.

On the road
Driving
Not as much of a driver's car as the GTi icon suggests.
Performance
Initially good. After a month or so, you just wish it had another 20bhp.
-
Living with it
Reliability
Developed a reasonably common GTi problem - intermittent stalling (even when warm) - very dangerous potentially!
Image
I'd wanted one for ages, but now I've owned one...
Comfort
Why is there no standard air con? In a GL you get rear headrests, why not a GTi?
-
Security and Service
Security
Aftermarket alarm/immobiliser is nothing but hassle - why was it not fitted as standard?
Service
Never had cause to contact VW due to their high prices!

Problems and Ownership

Engine
Damn intermittent stalling, which is so dangerous if it stalls while going round a roundabout.
Other
The stalling is enough for me!

Yes
