Economy
Value
Not cheap to buy, but you do get a solid dependable motor.
Costs
Insurance too steep and dealer servicing costs high. Expect around 33mpg on average, but up to 38-39 on a gentle cruise.

On the road
Driving
Solid but uninspiring to drive. Steering lacks feel and ride quality not great. Handling characterised by understeer, especially in the wet, with snappy oversteer to catch you out if pushed too hard.
Performance
A sheep in wolf's clothing. Performance is tepid at best. If you want proper GTi performance, buy a 16V instead.

Living with it
Reliability
Generally what you'd expect from VW. Engine speed sensor failed, confusing ECU and causing breakdown.
Image
Starting to slip, especially with the imminent arrival of the Mark V, which promises to be a much better drive.
Comfort
Comfortable seats with good range of adjustment. Steering wheel coud do with reach adjustment for taller drivers. Overall ride quality poor, with unsettled ride at most speeds on all but smooth roads.

Security and Service
Security
Standard alarm is shocking on a GTi, but does have an immobiliser.
Service
Not impressed. Overpriced and twice failed to correct minor problems pointed out prior to service.
