Economy
Value
Fantastic value at less than 5K to buy. Highline models come fully equipped (heated leathers, A/C electrics).
Costs
Not bad considering they're cheap to buy now. 20-22 mpg in town, 30-32 on motorways. Many parts can be sourced from Eurocarparts or German/ Swedish, but Dealer only parts are expensive. Insurance is high due high no of "maxed" Golfs out there.

On the road
Driving
Great at crusing, but not so good on bends where it tends to roll a bit. Overall it's safe and easy to drive, but just lacks that sporting feel. Engine deserves a better gearbox.
Performance
Awesome engine delivers power uniformly throughout rev range - superb torque especially at cruising speeds.

Living with it
Reliability
Perfectly reliable. I bought mine with 104K miles as the 3rd owner 2 yrs ago and 20K miles later it's still absolutely perfect.
Image
Well respected and still has a good image despite 2 newer models being released.
Comfort
More than comfortable for four adults plus luggage. Drivers seat not the most comfortable though - could do with more support.

Security and Service
Security
Immobiliser in key as standard, but no alarm
Service
I don't deal with VW stealerships. I have found a VW specialist who is cheaper and actually more knowledgable than the dealers are.
