Volkswagen Golf Hatchback 1.4 S 5d (1998/S) Owner Review

Economy
Value
I bought the Golf second-hand. I knew it would hold its price and can see it will be an easy sell for top money.
Costs
Insurance is very low, as is tax. No problems and only replaced brake pads and front tyres.

On the road
Driving
Good solid drive, no surprises. Steering is precise.
Performance
I was actually surprised how much grunt it had for such a small unit, especially compared to my previous car, a Honda Civic 1.4. I've certainly had fun on the back roads. Motorway speeds don't agree with it.

Living with it
Reliability
Not let me down yet.
Image
Golf is always good looking. Could use some nice alloys. Far too many on the road - up there with escorts and fiestas :(
Comfort
Seats are comfortable and has all the adjustments on the driver's seat. Plenty of room in the back and boot too. Has all electric windows, but no sunroof.

Security and Service
Security
Factory fitted immobiliser, deadlocks. Whose going to rob it anyway?
Service
Not used a VW garage yet, local garages are just as knowladgeable and labour much cheaper
