Volkswagen Golf Hatchback 1.6 16V SE 5d (2000/X) Owner Review

Economy
Value
Golfs are always too expensive. Should pay back when it's time to sell. The badge enjoys a good reputation.
Costs
The usual service charge gripes, but non-VW garages often lack knowledge/equipment/experience so it's worth paying the extra. Computer helps tame 'thirsty driving' habits!

On the road
Driving
Very smooth, solid feel extends from the steering right down to the cupholders.
Performance
Just enough power to cover everything, and nippy for it's weight. Easy to find yourself doing 100 on the motorway without realising it.

Living with it
Reliability
Bought second hand, engine management light on after 3000miles (69000 total).
Image
Well I love it, but then I drive one! In a word - understated!
Comfort
Top marks. Fantastic cockpit with well thought out controls. Lots of useful 'toys', all of which get used. Blue/red lights look great at night!

Security and Service
Security
High quality alarm, deadlocks. Remote locking is handy.
Service
Third party warranty has dictated non-VW servicing -would recommend paying the extra for dealer stamp in the service book.

Problems and Ownership
Problems
Engine
Engine management lamp illuminating on most trips, 'non VW' garage unable to find or fix problem -£50 to tell me though!
Other
Mystery clicking/knocking from drivers side pillar - can be annoying.
