Economy
Value
Bought from new, and lost a bit on trade in, but bought just before the mark v was released so expected to lose, and it wouldn't have come with the extras (CD player, alloys, air con and computer) if the mark v hadn't been on the way.
Costs
Service costs higher than average, but always felt I was getting good service. Fuel costs were ok.

On the road
Driving
Always good to drive, steering light despite the golf being a heavy car.
Performance
I went to this from a 1.2 Corsa, but I always loved driving my golf, fun to drive and quick enough for in town and motorways.

Living with it
Reliability
A couple of minor niggles (strange intermittent jerking when cruising on motorways, engine cut out a couple of times while idling), but on the whole pretty reliable.
Image
Golfs have always had a classy image, mark iv still looks great, years after it was launched!
Comfort
Front seats offered good support, never been in the back, but never had any complaints from passengers. Others people that have driven mine thought you say very low, but you get used to it. Golf's are commonly known for having a "high waistline."
