Volkswagen Golf Hatchback 1.6 Match 5d (2003/53) Owner Review

Economy
Value
Lots of goodies on the Match made this an attractive package (air con, alloys, black paint, trip computer and CD player).
Costs
Quite high dealer servicing costs (£90 for an air con service!) Economy seems about what you'd expect from a relatively heavy 103 bhp car.

On the road
Driving
Solid and comfy, not quick but certainly well refined compared to alternatives from the likes of Ford and Vauxhall.
Performance
My previous car was a 1.8 T Passat so it did seem a little under powered, however it is more than acceptable for a 1.6.

Living with it
Reliability
No problems since a gear box selector rod was replaced in the first week (under warranty).
Image
A Golf says everything about you and nothing about you.
Comfort
Front seats are brilliant even on long distances. Switches and switch gear are of a very high quality and easily to reach. Over all, I'm impressed!

Security and Service
Security
Standard alarm and immobiliser seem sufficient.
Service
As with all dealers, the service department staff appear to have gone to a different charm school than the sales staff (which is to be expected). When car wasn't ready on time I received a full tank of fuel...free.
