Value
We bought ours (privately) from an old lady who only put 8K in 18 months from new. Superb bargain.
Costs
Servicing can be expensive, even for a car as basic and plain as this. VW's servicing costs can be amongst the highest - though do shop around for service quotes as dealer prices vary.

On the road
Driving
Superbly confident in/about town and enjoyable to drive. Although, a little pushed at motorway speeds.
Performance
The car provided 105 BHP from it's 1.6 engine. Very responsive and eager. Although on motorways it did tend to 'top out' at 70 MPH since the engine was doing around 3k revs.

Living with it
Reliability
Got to be top-notch. First starter on time, every time. Eager engine, plastic and fit inside second to none.
Image
As an automatic this can be a very rare car to get. Dealers will charge premium price if they come across one. Seamless gear change. The automatic gearbox is supreme. Exterior looks of the MKIV Golf are still dashing, even in this cut down format.
Comfort
Very comfortable in any seats. Lots of space and supremely comfortable.

Security and Service
Security
Our had an 'after market' dealer fit alarm, although the immobilizer was standard. No complaints.
Service
Depends where you go. Some dealers are more helpful than others.
