Economy
Value
Good solid car, lots of safety equipment, this model is not the best value, though these non turbos are cheap to pick up 5 years old.
Costs
Horribly expensive when things go wrong - what you expect from VW main dealer.

On the road
Driving
OK for motorways, but soft handling, rubbish acceleration for a "GTi" because it is quite heavy. Not really a drivers car.
Performance
Not worthy of GTI badge! But still guzzles fuel. Get the turbo!

Living with it
Reliability
I bought it with reliability in mind, turned out to be the most unreliable car I've ever owned. Spent £1,700 in 1 year! Watch for Air Flow Meter failure, gear box clunking and dropping off at 55k miles, idles too high, oil leaking into coolant.
Image
Gets respect from others, and also attracts traffic light racers, who always laugh at its dismal performance.
Comfort
Very comfy seats across the GTI range, the heated seats are amazing! Make sure you get the winter pack!

Security and Service
Security
No problems with alarm/break ins etc, but the central locking has a mind of its own. I read that this was common. If buying, check that all the doors lock/unlock on request!
Service
Thorough but expensive, find independent specialist.

Problems and Ownership
Problems
Engine
Coolant, idles too high, rough when cold.
Other
Central locking dodgy, air con broke, air flow meter failed, oil sump cracked easily, cam belt very difficult to get to! Expensive!
