Volkswagen Golf Hatchback 1.8 T GTI 5d (1999/T) Owner Review

Economy
Value
Always an expensive choice in its class, but dare I say it: the classiest.
Costs
For what it is Volkswagen servicing and spares are resonable, fuel economy is good even on a thrash or long run. Tyre wear I found to be the biggest bug bear.

On the road
Driving
Never the sharpest GTi on the block but will understeer before too much drama and despite some body roll it remains fairly composed and always comfortable.
Performance
150 BHP? The weight has a lot to do with it but does not feel as quick as figures suggest. For real world performance you should look elsewhere or get it chipped by a reputable company.

Living with it
Reliability
Have never been let down by it although lots of niggles such as squeeks and rattles that you would not expect. Mechanically flawless so far but servicing should never be skipped, of course.
Image
It is a Golf with alloys from the factory really, doesn&'t look sporty enough for me. Unfortunatley has attracted a lot of unwelcome attention by way of vandalism and a smashed window.
Comfort
Fairly quiet, relaxed on motorways and long journeys, cruises comfortably, superb Recaro seats. Suprisingly very comfortable with a safe feel.

Security and Service
Security
As secure as a modern car can be with alarm, immobiliser and deadlocks. Two failed break in attempts although did have to pay to get half a screwdriver removed from the drivers door lock!
Service
Very good with attention to detail at my local dealer and resonably priced.
