Economy
Value
New models (esp imports) make this look expensive as a new purchase back in 1998.
Costs
Very good mileage (over 500 miles on a tank). Can seek out reasonable insurance premiums. Depreciation £6000 in three years from £16450 new price.

On the road
Driving
Always a joy to drive with plenty of pulling power through the gears. Seats give backache on longer journeys.
Performance
Quick enough.
-
Living with it
Reliability
Numerous problems. Alarm misfires, detached rear wash pipe, leaking offside door, fuses blown, glow plug warning lights come on, door lock barrels easily removed by vandals...
Image
They say diamond black is the best but if you see a clean red one...
Comfort
Supple ride spoiled by over firm seats.

Security and Service
Security
Well guarded but door barrels can be removed without triggering the alarm.
Service
Volkswagen dealers kind enough but just not that effective.
