Economy
Value
Chronically overpriced, especially used. Good news for resale though. Equipment fairly generous, but when Seat/Skoda can offer the same car for thousands less, or a broker can save you even more, you can't help feeling you're paying for a badge.
Costs
Excellent fuel economy, low depreciation and reasonable insurance make it a cheap car to own if you don't mind the initial outlay.

On the road
Driving
Brilliant engine dominates the driving experience, but the car itself is nothing special. Nose heavy, soggy suspension (even as a GT), numb steering, over-served brakes. As a motorway car it's brilliant, but no better than average elsewhere.
Performance
Fantastic engine pulls from nothing and always seems to have power in reserve. I don't think I've ever taken it beyond about 3,500 RPM and 3,000 is more than enough day to day. 6 speed 'box a bit clunky and notchy. Amazing performance/economy compromise.

Living with it
Reliability
Not great to be honest. Build quality also not as good as I was expecting.
Image
Supposed to be THE classless small hatchback. Gazillions of the things on the roads now though.
Comfort
Nice seats and comfortable driving position. Interior beautifully finished compared to the Ford Focus and other competition which makes up for its rather mediocre road ability.

Security and Service
Security
Haven't tested it yet, but no better or worse than anything else I would imagine. The cars are so common that they're hardly likely to stand out to thieves.
Service
Rude and overpriced main agent. Local specialist much better.

Problems and Ownership
Problems
Engine
Intermittent tappet noise which nobody seemed to be able to solve. Used almost as much oil as diesel for the first 5,000 miles. Glowplugs changed at 3 years old.
Other
Creaks and buzzes from trim, wiring problems disabled air conditioning twice, relay failed for the hazard warning flashers, earth fault on warning light cluster.
