So after many headaches with the mk5 2.0sdi we bought an older mk4 gt tdi - with relativaley low miles (about 110k).
The car itself for 23 years old is still solid to this day and keeps up with modern cars no issues. Build quality is superior to the mk5 in every single way, ride quality is also great.
Engine performance is top notch, pulls great in every gear (6 speed box), returns great MPG and pds are known for super reliability and longivaty.
You can often find nice examples of these cheap this day and age - one issue to look for is rusted/bubbled arches which is common.
