Volkswagen Golf Hatchback 1.9 S TDI 5d (1999/T) Owner Review

Economy
Value
Tdi is dear compared to the petrol
Costs
Oil service about £60 every 10k and £200 every £20k. Cambelt and tensioner about average cost and interval. Fuel economy awesome even when driven hard all day
-
On the road
Driving
Good crusing car, acceleration adequate, best driven using the ample torque. Feels solid ad nicely weighted steering although bit lumpy on poor roads
Performance
Plenty quick enough for everyday use. If you want the extra go, for rapid driving, you need the 115bhp GT-tdi at least. Later models were perkier with the the pd engine, but less reliable

Living with it
Reliability
Would have liked to have given full marks here, but had problem with ignition barrel (immobiliser problem) replaced under warranty but acted up occasionally afterwards
Image
It's a Golf!
Comfort
Seats firm and stayed that way

Security and Service
Security
Never had a problem
Service
Varies considerably depending on the Dealer. Some are excellent, (Peterborough and Nottingham had technicians who knew what they were doing). Some are shocking (headlamp bulbs upside down, stripped threads on brake assembly)
