Value
Too expensive for what you get.
Costs
Too early to say. Mpg only good (47 - 51 Mpg) at 50 mph. Not so good at Motorway speeds.

On the road
Driving
Good, better road holding than Mk4 1.6 SE 16v.
Performance
Higher bhp Engine than Mk4, but sluggish. May need time to run in.

Living with it
Reliability
Steering rack fault from new. Still not fixed after 7 months of ownership. VW continually keep you in the dark.
Image
VW Image fading fast. Only average car. Cannot sell cars on past success.
Comfort
Comfortable and stress free. Great driving position. Arrive at destination with no aches or pains. Tons of room in the back compared to previous Golfs.

Security and Service
Security
Hasn't been nicked yet!
Service
Purchased car with creek when steering left. To date no fix from VW only told factory looking into problem. Loads of other Golfs affected. So far returned car three times for fault but still not fixed.

Problems and Ownership
Problems
Engine
1.6 FSi unit promised loads but delivers not much, struggles uphill on motorways especially in 6th gear. Only average mpg. Poor when travelling at 70 mph.
Other
No major rattles in cabin yet, but car relatively young, although miles better than Mk 4 at this mileage which rattled like a biscuit tin with loose change in it! Unusual as the quality of its plastics in the cabin has obviously been downgraded.
