Should you buy one?

If you want a fast electric hatchback with a long electric range, the ID.3 GTX has many merits, but it doesn’t quite deliver as a truly engaging hot hatch and on its promise of being an electric GTI.

That doesn’t take away from what is still a very impressive hatchback, though, which is well-finished, well-equipped and has the best electric range of any Volkswagen ID.3 you can buy.

What we like

We like that Volkswagen has dialled up the performance without compromising on the ID.3’s everyday usability. This is a comfortable and refined EV that is still practical and ideal as a small family car. The GTX’s performance is brisk and it’s an easy car to drive at speed. The electric range is also one of the longest of any family hatchback, too.

What we don’t like

There’s room for more fun with the GTX. It’s not quite as fun as we’d hope for a hot hatchback, and lacks some of the agility and enjoyment you get from a Golf GTI. We think the design is quite bland for a hot hatch, too, and the biggest issue is that the similar Cupra Born VZ is better to drive yet also costs less to buy.
