Volkswagen ID.5 boot space, practicality and safety

- Plenty of space in the front
- Coupe roof restricts rear headroom
- No front boot
How much space is there?
The ID.5 is easily large enough to transport four adults. Legroom is virtually unchanged from the ID.4 SUV and headroom is only a little tighter than it’s boxier sibling. There’s plenty of room in the front, with a low-slung dashboard and large windscreen helping to make it feel more spacious.
But it’s behind this when you’re treated to more, with adults able to sit easily in the rear seats with lots of legroom especially. A flat rear floor courtesy also means there’s no central hump to contend with, and therefore you should get three in the rear for shorter journeys. Just watch out for the sloping roofline – taller rear-seat passengers might feel hemmed in.
Bootspace and storage
The 549-litre boot is a pleasant surprise, as it’s actually a little larger than the ID.4’s up to the parcel shelf thanks to being a little longer. It’s smaller with the rear seats folded, but you can still make room for up to 1,561 litres of stuff. It doesn’t compare well with the Tesla Model Y (654/2,041 litres), but it’s largely similar to the Hyundai Ioniq 5 (520/1,580 litres).
The boot is big and flat. It should certainly be large enough for most people’s needs. However, unlike with the Ford Mustang Mach-E, there’s no load area under the bonnet. The rear seats fold 60:40 and go almost completely flat with minimal loading lip to contend with. The boot floor can also be put on two levels, and you can also use part of the boot floor as an upright separator.

Is it easy to park?
The ID.5 is a large car with a sloping roofline. It’s this kink that makes it particularly difficult to see out of the back. However, all models come with a rear-view camera and a 360-degree one is on offer too, which greatly increases how easy it is to park.
It’s also not bad to thread through narrow streets thanks to good forward visibility. The only thing that lets it down is rear visibility, especially around the rear three-quarter area because of the chunky pillar and lack of glass – a trait of all coupe-styled SUVs.
Safety
- Five star Euro NCAP score
- Includes the latest safety tech
- Semi-autonomous tech broadly works well
The ID.5 received a full five stars from European testing authority Euro NCAP. It scored particularly well in the adult occupant tests and in the safety assist category. The high score can be attributed to the sheer number of driving aids it comes with.
The kit list includes Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Keeping Assist, autonomous emergency braking as well as a driver fatigue alert system.
During our testing we found the semi-autonomous tech that can control how fast you’re going and keep you in lane worked well, and performed calmly with no erratic speeding up or slowing down. It comes with three Isofix points as standard, one on the front passenger seat and two on the outer rear seats.
