Volkswagen ID.7 verdict
Should you buy one?
Yes, especially if you’re a long-distance driver. The ID.7 emerges as a suitable flagship for Volkswagen’s fast-growing range of electric cars. Slotting effortlessly into a crowded market, the ID.7 offers an appealing mix of comfort, serenity and efficiency to become one of the front-running cars in this class.
Yes, it’s more expensive than the Tesla Model 3 and BYD Seal, but it’s also larger and considerably more accommodating for anyone who regularly ferries around people and their luggage. As an alternative to the BMW i5 or Mercedes-Benz EQE, though, it looks little short of a bargain.
The ID.7 lacks direct competition, which means Volkswagen has an open goal to aim at. But taking a look around Volkswagen’s new range-topper, you’ll find it fixes a lot of mistakes seen on the rest of the ID line-up, and we’re keenly anticipating those improvements rolling out across the range.
What we like
The comfort of this car is truly impressive, as is the high-speed refinement. Factor in the room for passengers, and we’re looking at the perfect luxury cruiser. The range is unbeatable at this price point, with the ability to do 400 miles on a charge meaning it matches the range of many petrol and diesel cars.
What we don’t like
Some of the driver assistance systems are a little too intrusive, and it’s hardly exciting to drive or look at. We’d recommend skipping the GTX too, as its performance gains are insignificant compared to the extra cost of buying it in the first place and loss of electric range.
