Volkswagen Jetta 1.3 4d (1987/E) Owner Review

Economy
Value
The Jetta is a very valued car. Cheap and accessible, the Jetta can hold its money if well looked after. Tends to be the more 'adult' choice compared with the Golf. Less likely to be thrashed.
Costs
Like all VWs, the Jetta does have credentials when it comes to servicing/repair work. However, ones that have been well looked after can be a very good buy.

On the road
Driving
The Jetta as standard does lack cornering ability, but has a very nice driving position and compares well with other cars of that generation; Rover 213s, Peugeot 309s etc.
Performance
1050s are very underpowered, as are the 1300s, but the 1.6, 1.8 and the GTi 8v and 16v are good, reliable, solid cars when compared with others around it. The 139bhp 16v is remarkably quick.

Living with it
Reliability
VWs shall always keep their responsibility when it comes to reliability. Parts are always accessable, but do not come cheap.
Image
The Jetta has a very basic but sleek presence about it. Maybe not the revolution the Golf had, but certainly when it comes to saloons it's at the top.
Comfort
A very comfortable journey can be accomplished in the Jetta. Not as hard on the bumps as the Golf, but does keep its strength when needed.

Security and Service
Security
No standard equipment. Best to find one with customised alarm/immobiliser.
Service
VW have given me a very high satisfactory level since I've bought this car.
