Lupo’s comprehensive engine line-up is kicked off with a 1.0. It’s willing around town, but outclassed on the motorway. The three 1.4s (75bhp and 100bhp petrols and a 75bhp turbo-diesel) are competent in all areas. 1.7 SDi is off the pace and gives lower mpg than the 1.4 TD. The 125bhp 1.6 petrol is a real pocket rocket.
Lupo handles confidently. It can be thrown around corners without problems and has precise steering and a snappy gearchange. A short wheelbase means the ride can be a bit harsh.
