Volkswagen Passat Estate CL TDI 5d (1994/L) Owner Review
-
Economy
Value
Superb build quality. TDi holds its value well - try to find one. Insist on f.s.h.
Costs
Dealers expensive for servicing. Use ex-VW specialists for work at reasonable prices.

On the road
Driving
Solid and stable. Fairly stiff suspension makes for a good, firm ride. Mine tows a 1200kg caravan without much effort.
Performance
Not the quickest off the mark, but pulls like a train in 4th and 5th.

Living with it
Reliability
Should present no problems with full history. Make sure to change cam belt at specified intervals for peace of mind.
Image
Go for the facelifted model after Jan 94. Not everybody's choice, but solid and reliable.
Comfort
Comfortable seats. Oceans of space in the rear. Does not roll much.

Security and Service
Security
Immobiliser fitted and locks seem good. Would be safer to fit an aftermarket alarm. To be on the safe side, park next to a more 'desirable' motor!
Service
Any queries were answered by VW personnel without hesitation.
