Volkswagen Passat Estate (2005 - 2011) 2.0 SE TDI 5d Owner Review

In their own words
I bought the Passat in January 2014 with 118k on the clock from a local independent dealer. The car had really good (full) history and seemed well looked after. I had the car serviced 3 times during my ownership of 32k miles. Also had the timing belt, front brakes, tyres and one of the hadbrake motors replaced. In May 2016 the gearbox went, I sourced a 2nd hand replacement and also had the clutch and dmf replaced whie the gearbox was out. Total bill, £1300. Then, September 2016, the timing came untensioned 9 months after being replaced. Potential bill, new engine (£1000+). I decided to cut my losses and sold the car on to a mechanic who will do the work and keep the car for himself. Overall, these are a superb motorway cruiser, but seem to be a very risky used car purchase.
How reliable do you find the car?
Have sold the car now to a mechanic for £500 after the engine completely ate itself. A very nice car to drive, but be warned that when they go wrong nothing for them is cheap to fix. A complex car made from fragile parts.Does the car do everything you expected it to do?
