The Passat earned a maximum five-star rating for crash safety from Euro NCAP and an impressive four stars for child protection. The R36 comes with six airbags as standard (rear side airbags can be specified as an optional extra), ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution, stability control in the form of ESP, traction control and an electronic locking differential.

The R36 is available as a saloon or an estate and boasts the same practicality as the standard Passat. In the four-door model the rear seats fold to increase load capacity, while the boot offers up to 485 litres of luggage space with them in place. It’s easy to use too, thanks to a wide load area and low boot lip. The estate is hugely practical with 513 litres of boot space with the seats in place and 1641 litres with them folded.

With the rear seat cushions lifted the seatbacks can be folded to create an entirely flat load area, and there is an optional luggage organiser which helps keep luggage secure while you are driving. There is no key for the ignition, instead a keyfob is inserted into the dashboard and pushed to start or stop the engine. Full keyless entry can also be specified.
