Volkswagen Passat Saloon (1988-1997) engines, drive and performance

(change model)
A broad range of engines, the 1.8 and old 1.6 TD are sluggish, whilst the 2.0 model is a good all-rounder. The 2.0 16v and VR6 are flyers for those seeking performance. The frugal 1.6 and 1.9 TDi suits the steady image and family workhorse aspirations.
Ride is on the firm side, but this generally gives a feeling of composure. Handling is predictable if rather unexciting. Feels steady in slower models whilst quicker versions seem more responsive.
