  • Economy

    Value

    4 out of 5 4.0

Basically, a cheap way to buy an Audi A6! Dealer prices are high, though.

    Costs

    3 out of 5 3.0

Automatics are thirsty - expect around 30mpg. Around 40mpg for manual.

  • On the road

    Driving

    4 out of 5 4.0

Very impressive for a big family car. Handling is predictable and the car is forgiving when cornering in slippery conditions. The suspension, brakes and steering are near perfect.

    Performance

    3 out of 5 3.0

1.8 20V engine is responsive, tough and well suited to the auto box. Quick from a standing start, with seemingly endless power reserves when overtaking and powerful brakes.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    4 out of 5 4.0

Never let me down yet, but then it is a German car!

    Image

    3 out of 5 3.0

Classy, like the A6, but the less distinguished badge doesn't attract as much attention as it perhaps deserves! The Passat's popularity has ensured that it will never enjoy the exclusivity of the A6.

    Comfort

    5 out of 5 5.0

Top marks; electric heated mirrors, electric windows, climate control, PAS, cupholders and airconditioned glovebox! Need I say more?

  • Security and Service

    Security

    5 out of 5 5.0

This car even locks itself if you forget to! Just remember to keep your keys on you at all times, otherwise you might have to call a professional car thief to attempt to gain entry for you.

    Service

    5 out of 5 5.0

No quibbles where the warranty is concerned. If something's broken, they'll fix it (providing it's covered). Servicing is reasonable, but not cheap. Parts are expensive.
