Volkswagen Passat Saloon 1.8T 20V Sport 4d (AC) (1998/S) Owner Review

-
Economy
Value
Minus the 4 rings, it's the same car. Quality at an affordable price compared to Audi.
Costs
Don't go independent on the cambelt and tensioner change. Let someone who knows what he is doing replace it.

On the road
Driving
I've had an A4. Trust me there is no difference.
Performance
The turbo kicks in like a plane about to take off.
-
Living with it
Reliability
Two words - German quality - say no more.
Image
I feel the only let-down is the rear looks, not as sophisticated as the A4-A6.
Comfort
I am not a fan of the sport seats. They could be more comfortable. Blue dash illumination is a pleasure in night driving.

Security and Service
Security
Alarm and immobiliser is adequate.
Service
Better going to a VW/Audi specialist who knows his stuff.
-
Problems and Ownership
Problems
Engine
Cambelt schedule debatable and critical like all cars it should be every 80k miles, I'd say 50-60k.
Other
Like all cars, the VW/Audi will run to very high miles if service schedules are adhered to.
Ownership
Did you buy the car new?
Used
Would you buy the same model again?
Yes
Did you buy from the same manufacturer again?
Yes
