Summary
What does this car say about you?
Sensible and wallet-weary.

A shiny VW badge and black bodywork. It was cool but there are so many about now.

January 2006

My insurance company lent me the car for one month.
What was the dealer like?

Driving it
What's it like to drive?
It does its job but is underpowered for the weight of the car. I understand why I see so many 2.0TDIs.....in black. I found 1st and 3rd gear close.
What's it like to park?
You can't see the bootline from the driver's seat and there are no sensors so it's tricky.

Living with it
Have you had any problems with the car?
The electromagnetic parking brake is an arm's stretch away to the right of the steering wheel. It requires timing to press it whilst you release the clutch on hill starts and reverses. One Passat driver stopped me to ask whether I had any problems with it. He did.
What's most practical about your car?
Diesel economy of 665 miles on one tank (67ish litres) with 66 miles on reserve of fuel. That's just over 45mpg overall.
Favourite gadget, option or accessory?
The 1.9 is poverty specification and VW charge for the decent gizmos. The electromagnetic parking brake was a novelty....at first. The standard beatbox is sub-standard.
