Summary
What does this car say about you?
Someone who cared for quality (but got duped by the VW image).
What do your friends / family / neighbours think of the car?
Our family has always been a VW fan but after our experience, I don't think they will remain a fan.
Would you buy this car again and why?
I would love to buy it again but only if VW offered a comprehensive warranty.
What are you likely to buy next?
I would be looking at some Korean alternatives quite keenly.

Buying experience
Type of dealer you bought from?
Independent
Did you buy this car new?
No
What price did you pay?
£0
When did you buy the car?
August 2010
Did you get a good deal and why?
Paid a few hundred pounds etc but wanted the peace of mind as the dealer was going to do a service/mot etc.
Is there any special reason why you bought this car?
Already had a Passat (1999 Reg) which we kept for 9 years. That Passat reached 196k miles before we changed it. It had never broken down during all that time.
What was the dealer like?
Coastline Cars in Poole. Good, friendly service. Gave us plenty of time to test drive the car.

Driving it
What's it like to drive?
A huge improvement over the older Passat when it came to the driving characteristics. Wider/lower profile tyres and an extra 30bhp produced a much nicer driving experience.
What's it like to park?
We had the rear parking sensors fitted without which the car would be difficult to park this big car in tight spaces (rear window visibility not great).

Living with it
Have you had any problems with the car?
This car has destroyed our faith in VW quality. Unlike the previous model which never broke down in 9 years of service, the 2005 model broke down 5 times while driving on the motorway. Each time the issue was different and required a lot of hassle and wasted time to get fixed. VW (credit to them) did replace all fuel injectors but we couldn't wait for yet another stupid thing to go wrong. Parted with the car even before it reached 90k on the clock.
What's most practical about your car?
Lots of room, big boot, reasonable economy. Nicely laid out interior.
