Volkswagen Polo Coupe (1984 - 1994) Boulevard 3d (94) Owner Review
In their own words
Still the favourite of all the cars I've owned (hence why I still own it) - I bought it as my first car at the age of 17 to learn to drive in and I haven't stopped loving it since! First wanted a pre facelift car however these (especially 'breadvans'!) have shot up in value recently. To breakdown the price I paid, in early 2021 I paid £700 for the 94 Polo, and have since spend about £1100 on maintenance and repairs. For £1800 you can't get a better classic! The gearbox is classic 80s so a bit lumpy but never fails on you - and being 4 speed isn't great on the motorway. I've gotten the car up to 80mph and wouldn't dare to go any faster! Brakes are really spongey however don't be put off as this is just a feature of these Polos. Other cars I would consider for those wanting a retro hatchback (or first car):
Peugeot 205, these drive nicer than the Polo however the build quality and part availability is so much worse than the Polo
Renault 5, these are a lot more expensive than the Polo however have a much worse build quality. Are more sought after however
Rover Metro, these suffer with rust, and the k series models suffer with engine problems too, the hydro suspension is also a weak point but gives great handling. Good parts support with the Metros too.
Overall the Polo mk2 is a fantastic little retro hatchback which is steadily seeing values rise and turns heads - people love it!
How reliable do you find the car?
Typical classic car ownership where nothing goes perfectly - but I've only ever been stranded once (and still then managed to waddle the car home)
Does the car do everything you expected it to do?
Great little cheap classic car which turns heads and starts conversations with strangers whos mum/dad/brother/sister/friend had one
