Volkswagen Polo Hatchback 1.3i CL 3d (1990/G) Owner Review

Economy
Value
Not the cheapest old hatch out there, but tough as old boots and reliable.
Costs
Head gasket needs doing at 100k; older fuel tanks tend to leak at welded join; carburettor might need seeing to after 120k miles or so. Find a good mechanic or DIY and it wont cost too much, though.

Driving
Easy to drive once you get used to self-adjusting clutch. Gearbox stiff, but will take punishment. Tyres too skinny for its power - lots of understeer when cornering at speed. CRAP brakes.
Performance
Nice engine when carb is clean. Revs quite high for what it is. Put a Weber on top of the manifold and watch it fly! Remeber to leave a gap...

Living with it
Reliability
Mine starts first time and despite a f**ked automatic choke, it purrs when idling. Get some Redex through it and regular oil changes and it will never let you down.

Comfort
Fine round town. Can be a bit uncomfortable for long journeys. Heater depends entirely on engine temperature. Quite roomy for a small car, though.

Security and Service
Security
I can get into mine in 5 seconds without keys - I have timed it...
Service
Main dealer was excellent for parts. Intelligent staff.
