Economy
Value
Expensive for what it is, but it is a good car compared to most other small cars of similar age.
Costs
Running costs fine insurance & tax good fairly cheap but VW servicing is expensive, as are parts.
-
On the road
Driving
Heavy steering without PAS, but good handling & acceleration is fine. Some road noise at high speed but nothing terrible.
Performance
Good car, handles well in town & on motorways. Good fuel economy too, but better in motorway miles.

Living with it
Reliability
A few niggles (mostly age related) but one big fault (engine starting then failing after 2/3 seconds - needed new distributor) that took 3 garage visits to discover! Make sure timing belt is changed at 60,000 miles.
Image
Hasn't dated too badly at all, but its quite conservative.
Comfort
Very comfortable for drivers (even tall ones), rear passenger space a bit tight though. Boot is large, & with rear seats folded down the back holds a lot of stuff!

Security and Service
Service
VW servicing & parts are expensive, but in general service is very good. Some dealers better than others - try to get recommendations.

Problems and Ownership
Problems
Engine
The only problem was starting then failing, caused by faulty distributor.
Other
Rear washer jet hasn't worked for 2 years & VW have no idea why!
