-
Economy
Value
Expensive to buy and service. Hold their value well, however.
Costs
VW dealers expensive for parts. Even the aftermarket is pricey compared to other marques.
-
On the road
Driving
Surprisingly agile for a VW; Steering a touch too light and narrow wheels limit grip, but there is far worse on the market.
Performance
1400 engine a bit noisy when worked, but remains quite torquey throughout the rev range, making it an easy drive.
-
Living with it
Reliability
Mechanicals extremely tough. Electrics not so great, however.
Image
VW has always had a good image. Car is quite understated.
Comfort
Seats aren't bad. Cabin is spacious for its size and good quality materials boost the look of the interior.
-
Security and Service
Security
Locks are supposedly improved, but still look a touch weak. Never had it broken into, though.
Service
Only received one service from a dealer and although expensive, was brilliantly carried out - car was valeted and driven back to place of work.

Problems and Ownership
Problems
Engine
Whines a bit at low revs, but extremely reliable.
Other
The passenger electric window motor seized and occasionally the dash illumination gives out.
