Economy
Value
VWs hold their values better than most cars. Mine's 8 now, and is worth about 900-1000 according to Parkers/Glass's
Costs
My dads a mechanic so i get the labour for free! As for parts is hasn't had much needed whilst i've had it. Parts are fairly expensive, but you get what you pay for: quality product for a quality car - keep it all original VW and it'll do another 170k!!

On the road
Driving
My polo (96 P) has almost reached 170,000 miles, 20k of which i've done in the year and half i've had it, and still drives as new, handles fantastic, does 50mpg, is fairly powerful and nippy, still looks modern etc!
Performance
Can leave most other small cars standing! And still does 45mpg if i drive it hard.

Living with it
Reliability
Once in a few months has a bit of trouble starting, engine flooding for some reason, but 99% of the time its fantastic
Image
I think the polo is the best looking small hatchback. Right up until the new model with the daft Merc-like lights, which have ruined the small but tough image of the Polo.
Comfort
Very comfortable to drive, lots of adjustments possible to seats, steering etc. Good seats, good driving position.

Security and Service
Security
Factory fitted immobiliser, self-fitted toad alarm which adds ""remote"" to the central locking.
Service
Had no service from VW so cannot comment. My Dad has a new Bora though, and VW's service has been A*
