Volkswagen Polo Hatchback (2000 - 2002) 1.4 S (60ps) 3d Auto Owner Review

I bought this as a "non-runner", needing a car to take stuff to the tip inexpensively during a major DIY project. Having been sat for a year outdoors, it started first time once the battery was charged. After an oil change, plugs & filters, plus a bit of easy brake work it sailed through an MOT. I've now done 3000 miles in the car in just a few months. It starts every time, runs all day, doesn't squeak or rattle and takes everything I throw at it. I didn't expect much, but have become quite attached! Loads of minor bits have broken - window regulator, indicator switch, door lock, fuel cap - but everything made of metal is fine. I've replaced many parts from second hand. Best of all are two things. First is 39mpg, which isn't bad for an 8V 1,4 auto. Second is the handling. What the the car lacks in poke it gives back in grip, feel and road holding. It's never going to win a drag race, but the stiff chassis and direct steering make it a hoot. I shall keep running it until it dies, and I see no sign of it yet. Long live banger-nomics!
