Fuel economy
A more stringent standard for fuel economy (WLTP) was introduced from September 2017, and this model was not required to undergo that test.
Its fuel economy measured under the previous test system was 37 - 74 mpg. However these figures are less likely to be achievable in real world driving and so should never be compared to another car's mpg which was measured under the newer, more realistic WLTP system.

- Well-maintained examples can be economical
- Overall light, efficient design
- Maintenance isn’t too expensive, either
Bluemotion models offer in excess of 74mpg in mixed driving, according to official figures but the other diesels are still very economical while the petrols aren’t too far behind. Service intervals are infrequent and it’s sure to hang onto its value, protecting you from the worst in depreciation.
The Polo Bluemotion models have CO2 emissions of 99g/km, which mean they are low enough to avoid vehicle excise duty. Most other models are fairly typical for a small car and should be easy on the conscience.
Volkswagen Polo Mk4 reliability
We haven’t heard many complaints of major issues and most owners report excellent reliability – frequently many replace their Polo with another which is the ultimate endorsement.
