Volkswagen Polo Hatchback (2009 - 2017) 1.2 S (AC) 5d Owner Review

In their own words
Car was comfortable and smooth driving. Spacious and very quiet with excellent fuel consumption on long journeys, very low on pulling power though with 4 adults on board and struggles badly uphill due to 3 cylinders. Usually drive alone which balances out. Would have given an overall good rating but the serious engine issue was not publicised by VW though other countries did a recall, this left owners to discover they are liable for fixing a manufacturing defect which is appalling aftercare of owners and subsequent buyers, means I will never buy another VW. Kept my repair invoice to sell on the car as otherwise it might reduce its value.
How reliable do you find the car?
Engine fitted with faulty tensioner on production line 2012/13. Bought car 9 months old but UK owners not informed. No recall even though engine can and did fail without warning. Failed Xmas 2018 and towed to Audi specialist then cost £2500 to get it running. Only after I got it back did I disover the fault had been identified 5 years earlier and a new style tensioner fitted in new cars only later in 2013. Having serious family problems I didn't have time to consider a new engine instead as the repair escalated twice from £900 to £1500 before ending at more than 25% of what I paid for the car.About their car
